March, 2007 Share our excitement as we prepare for the vacation of a lifetime!

The Carters, human and canine, are preparing for a motorhome trip through British Columbia, the Canadian Rockies, the Yukon and Alaska. We will be traveling in our 31-foot motorhome, a Holiday Rambler Admiral 30PDD, and towing our 4-wheel-drive Suzuki Samurai for off-road exploring. We rented a motorhome in the summer of 2002 for a tour of the National Parks of Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado and Utah. After 17 days and 3000 miles, we returned the rental coach and went RV shopping almost immediately. We bought a 25-foot Georgie Boy Landau and traveled frequently for the next 3½ years. Then, we decided we wanted to go to Alaska and began preparing for the trip. First, we traded up to a roomier coach, our current HR Admiral. We ordered the coach from the factory, waiting over 3 months for it to be built with our chosen options. We included a bigger AC, dual-pane windows and extra batteries, all with an eye towards this trip. We have installed solar panels and an inverter so we can camp without services anywhere along the way. Now, with 2 months remaining before departure, we are packing and organizing our supplies for a 3-month adventure through all types of terrain and climate.

D-day minus 1

Tomorrow morning, we pull away from home and start our Alaska adventure. We're frantically running around doing all the last-minute (and forgotten-until-now) stuff. We still have 2½ weeks until our caravan rendez-vous in Ephrata, Washington. However, we'll be busy until then.

First we stop in the Bay area to visit friends. We'll camp at Anthony Chabot Regional Park in Oakland (actually closer to Castro Valley) Monday and Tuesday. Then we head for Oregon - Wednesday night at the Antlers Forest Service Campground by Lake Shasta, Thursday night somewhere in southern Oregon then we meet friends near Salem, OR for a Memorial Day weekend campout at Silver Falls State Park.

The last week in May will be spent at the Monaco Coach Corp. Service Center in Harrisburg, OR. They will do some warranty work on the coach while we camp in "Camp Monaco", the campground on the premises.

June 1, we're headed for the Columbia Gorge and a fun time viewing the waterfalls that feed the Columbia River. (In ~1985, I took my mother, sister and niece on a trip through the Northwest. My niece and I especially remember climbing the cliff and walking BEHIND the waterfall at Multnomah Falls. I don't know if that's still possible but I look forward to visiting that site again.) We'll go as far east as Hood River then turn north into central Washington to arrive in Ephrata on June 5. Then, the adventure really begins!

I'm using Steve's 19" LCD Monitor and wearing it out. Also installed 60 Mb drive in my laptop. Works great. Enjoy your trip. We'll be in Alaska in August.
